What tips do you have for tuning into yourself & tuning out external criticism?

“One of the hardest parts of my journey was tuning out all the limiting and fear-based ideas around me. When I first left my corporate marketing job to help women turn their passions and interests into successful business ventures, so many people told me that to be financially successful, I would need to focus on working with bigger companies with larger budgets. Close friends and family members often said similar things about my dance journey––that it was a nice hobby but I couldn't possibly make a living from it, or that my body would give out after a few years (I was in my early twenties when I started!). Every time someone said something like this to me, I would write it down in my journal and then cross it out and re-write it into something that felt more true. Often, adding context really helps here. For example, the friend who told me I would need to work with bigger companies and larger budgets? He was a marketing consultant and had worked with several Fortune 500 companies, so that's all he knew. His comment was about him and his experience, not about me or my idea. Once I was able to identify all of that, it was a lot easier for me to tune out his comment and focus instead on what I know to be true for myself and my career: I love working with people one-on-one; I'm incredibly good at seeing others people's stories and helping them tell them in a way that resonates with a specific audience; I excel at organizing a lot of information and bringing an idea to life; I know a lot of women, who know a lot of women, who know even more women. I call this re-scripting and it's such a great tool to help you tune into yourself and tune out external feedback!”
